National Herstory

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. was founded on November 12,1922 at Butler University Indianapolis, Indiana, by seven determined, motivated, and educated women. Sigma Gamma Rho is the only historically black sorority to be founded on a predominately white campus and has with stood the test of time to emerged as a leading national service organization. At a time where education for African Americans was difficult to attain the founders of Sigma Gamma Rho became educators. They believed that the Self-Respect, Knowledge, and Discipline gained through study would help individuals recognize their duties and responsibilities to society and one another. Founded on “Sisterhood, Scholarship, and Service”; Sigma Gamma Rho’s light continues to shine bright throughout the world.
